Core Concept

The Sma opposed relying on law codes while neglecting the study of the original sources, and so he wrote commentaries on the Tur and the Shulchan Arukh. In the Prisha he traces the Tur’s rulings to their sources in the Talmud and the Rishonim, and in the Drisha he discusses the various views at length.

Biography

One of the great Acharonim in Poland, born in Krakow and a disciple of the Maharshal and the Rema. He headed a yeshiva in Lviv, where he died in 1614, and taught many students. He wrote Drisha and Prisha on the Tur and Meirat Einayim (the Sma) on the Choshen Mishpat of the Shulchan Arukh, and both were later printed in most editions of the Tur and the Shulchan Arukh.
