The Work, Torah Teaching and Spiritual Figure of the Kabbalist Rabbi Amos Kamus Chaim Guetta

14 min read·2,817 words

Summary

This research report surveys the life and Torah contribution of Rabbi Amos Kamus Chaim Guetta, a key figure in the spiritual leadership of Libyan Jewry in Netanya, who moved from an academic and modern course of life to mystical asceticism and in-depth study of Kabbalah. The text outlines his distinctive teaching, which combines halakha with the esoteric teaching, with an emphasis on extreme modesty, the preservation of North African traditions and complete devotion to the needs of the public without accepting material reward. Through an analysis of his communal activity and the personal tragedies he experienced, the source seeks to explain how the rabbi became a focus of religious renewal for diverse audiences. The document closes with a description of the circumstances of his tragic death in 2026 and with a sociological examination of the "open door" model, which illustrates the built-in vulnerability of accessible communal leadership, set against the transformation of his figure into a symbol of the sanctification of God's name (kiddush Hashem) and of collective memory.

The figure of the gaon and kabbalist Rabbi Amos Kamus Chaim Guetta, of blessed memory, represents a unique and multidimensional model of Sephardi-Haredi spiritual leadership in the city of Netanya and in the diaspora of Libyan Jewry at the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first.[1, 2] The fascinating transition he made in his life, from a medical student and a postman in the state's service to mystical asceticism, in-depth study of Kabbalah and the founding of a bustling spiritual center, constitutes a historical and sociological crossroads that sheds light on processes of religious renewal, the preservation of communal traditions from North Africa and coping with complex communal and personal crises.[1, 3]

This research report presents an in-depth analysis of his life story, his method of study, his public enterprises, the foundations of his kabbalistic and halakhic teaching, and the circumstances of his tragic passing, while considering the sociological significance of his work among the Netanya community and Libyan Jewry in Israel and around the world.[1, 2, 4]

✦

Life Story and Personal Transitions

Rabbi Guetta's life course moved along a double axis of integration into modern Israeli society alongside an uncompromising longing for spiritual asceticism and holiness.[1] His key biographical data reflect these transitions and the complex struggles that accompanied his personal and family life:

The decision Rabbi Guetta made in his youth to abandon his academic medical studies and his secure position in the postal service in favor of total devotion to the world of Torah marks a profound ideological change.[1] This choice reflects a broader trend of the growth of the Sephardi Torah world in those decades, rejecting the accepted model of bourgeois settling-in in favor of building a rooted and independent spiritual identity.[1, 3]

✦

Spiritual Nourishment and His Principal Teachers

Rabbi Guetta began his analytical Torah studies at the "Or HaTorah" kollel in Netanya, an institution that served as a central anchor for raising Torah scholars from among the city's Sephardi public.[1, 3] In this kollel he acquired his Torah from the gaon Rabbi Shimon Gabbai, of blessed memory, who was among the pioneers of establishing the world of Torah in Netanya.[1, 2] A close public partnership developed between the two, focused on drawing hearts closer, consolidating religious institutions and building cohesive communities around the values of tradition.[2]

Alongside the study of the revealed Torah and of halakha, Rabbi Guetta was drawn to the depths of the esoteric world and of the kabbalistic teachings.[1, 2] To advance in this field, he persevered for many years in regular trips to Moshav Porat, where he studied in a long and intensive chavruta (study partnership) with the godly kabbalist Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Yitzhaki, of blessed memory.[1, 3] This way of study, which combined the depth of the mystical with practices of piety and modesty, shaped Rabbi Guetta's spiritual personality as a kabbalist who refused to pride himself on his title, while taking care to relate directly and simply to all who turned to him.[1, 3]

✦

His Torah Teaching: A Synthesis of Halakha, Kabbalah and the Refinement of Character

Rabbi Guetta's Torah teaching was not characterized by the writing of abstract theoretical works, but by its application in practice and its transmission through oral classes and talks of mussar and personal guidance.[1, 3, 9] His worldview rested on several clear methodological and ideological foundations:

The Unity of the Revealed and the Hidden

Rabbi Guetta championed a harmonious and complete combination of the teaching of the plain meaning with the teaching of the mystical, completely rejecting any separation between them.[2] In his regular classes for kollel students and yeshiva students, he combined complex Talmudic topics, current halakhic rulings, and deep mystical explanations based on the writings of the Arizal and the kabbalists.[1, 2] He held that the study of Kabbalah is not a detached metaphysical pursuit, but a tool of the first order for refining one's intention in the fulfillment of the daily commandments and for strengthening simple faith.[2, 3]

The Model of "Lishmah" and Distance from the Pleasures of This World

One of the most prominent characteristics of his practical teaching was an extreme abstention from any material or political gain derived from his Torah standing.[1, 2] The rabbi was known for consistently refusing to accept personal donations, pidyonot (redemption payments) or payment for the advice, blessings and spiritual accompaniment he gave to the masses.[1] His students and acquaintances described him as one who "killed himself in the tent of Torah", and he kept a very meager and modest way of life in his home on Einstein Street, out of the conception that the spiritual leader must serve as a living example of a life devoted solely to Heaven and to others.[1, 2]

Preserving the Prayer Tradition and Customs of Libyan Jewry

Rabbi Guetta worked tirelessly to preserve the distinctive character of the heritage of Libyan Jewry.[2] Naming his yeshiva after the Tunisian-Libyan kabbalist Rabbi Yitzhak Chai Taieb, of blessed memory, expresses his wish to instill in his students the values of simplicity, communal warmth and the absence of pretension that characterized the sages of North Africa.[1, 2] In his classes and talks he stressed the importance of observing the commandments with joy, prayer with intention, the refinement of character and the strengthening of simple faith, and he refused to adopt the communal tendency toward insularity or sectoral arrogance.[3]

✦

Public Activity, Communal Leadership and Crisis Management

The central foundation of Rabbi Guetta's public activity was the "Rabbi Yitzhak Chai Taieb" yeshiva and beit midrash in Netanya, located on Shimon Bar Yochai Street and on the adjacent Einstein Street.[1, 2] This institution served as a beacon of Torah and prayer, and was a daily point of attraction for diverse groups of the population, from older kollel students, through baalei teshuvah (returnees to observance), to members of the community of Libyan origin and residents of Netanya and the surrounding area.[1, 3]

At the place the rabbi ran an extensive and direct system for receiving the public, in which he helped those who turned to him with guidance and advice on matters of family, livelihood, health, education and matchmaking.[3] Masses of residents saw him as an address open to every distress, and described him as a figure with a pleasant countenance who received every person with love and a cheerful face.[2, 4]

On the political and social plane, Rabbi Guetta stood by the Shas movement from the day of its founding, out of the conception that it served as a central tool for restoring the crown to its former glory, for raising the prestige of Sephardi Jewry and for spreading Torah among the broad strata of the public.[2] Nevertheless, his own activity was never colored in narrow party colors; he took care to maintain a warm and open relationship with all the audiences in the city, religious and non-religious alike.[3, 10]

His ability as a communal leader and his operational flexibility stood out especially during the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.[1] In view of the severe health restrictions that threatened the traditional schedules of study and prayer, the rabbi decided to move his seat temporarily to the city of Tiberias together with a select group of his students.[1] There, far from his permanent beit midrash in Netanya, he managed to maintain fixed study sessions and regular prayers, demonstrating a deep commitment to the continuity of Torah under all conditions and in every situation.[1]

✦

Double Bereavement as an Engine of Spiritual Growth

Rabbi Guetta's spiritual world was refined in a series of extremely severe family tragedies, which became the supreme test of his faith.[1, 2] The first disaster struck him when he lost his young son, who was killed in a tragic road accident only a short time after celebrating his bar mitzvah.[1] Despite the abysmal pain, the rabbi chose not to sink into grief but to continue his public activity with even greater vigor, translating the personal loss into a deepening of the compassion and support he gave to brokenhearted families who turned to him.[1]

Decades later, in April 2026, another heavy disaster struck the rabbi with the death of his second son.[6] The double family tragedy, which occurred within a few days of another family event, left an inescapable mark on the entire community, which watched the rabbi, at an advanced age, bury his second son.[6] His students testified that the fact that he chose to continue spreading light, teaching, and being an address for help even after this chilling loss was conclusive proof of his spiritual strength and of his unshakable trust in the Creator.[1, 11]

✦

The Murder on 16 Tammuz 5786 and Its Circumstances

On Wednesday, 16 Tammuz 5786 (1 July 2026), at about 05:40 in the morning, Rabbi Amos Guetta was murdered inside his beit midrash on Shimon Bar Yochai Street in Netanya, an event that deeply shocked the Torah world and Israeli society as a whole.[1, 12]

The murderer, a young man in his twenties and a resident of Netanya, used to frequent the beit midrash regularly and was known as part of the rabbi's spiritual court.[2, 12] The suspect, who was described in initial reports as mentally disturbed, arrived at the place in the early morning hours and asked to pray the morning prayer (Shacharit) together with the rabbi.[4, 13] At a certain point a heated argument developed between the suspect and the rabbi's associates, because of the young man's intense and uncontrolled wish to come physically close to the rabbi.[14] During the confrontation, the suspect drew a knife and stabbed Rabbi Guetta four times in the upper body.[14] The gabbai of the yeshiva, who courageously tried to come between the attacker and the rabbi and to prevent further stabbing, was also wounded during the incident.[14]

First-aid teams of Magen David Adom (MDA) and MDA-Hatzalah Sharon were called to the scene at 05:45.[12] The senior medic of the MDA motorcycle unit, Maor Branz, together with the medics Yonatan Yankelevich and Shmuel Salmon, found the rabbi unconscious, without pulse or breathing and suffering from very severe penetrating stab wounds.[12] The teams gave him life-saving treatment and performed intensive and prolonged resuscitation on him during the urgent evacuation in an intensive care ambulance to Laniado Hospital in the city.[12] Despite the efforts of the doctors in the trauma room, his wounds were fatal and his death was pronounced shortly after his arrival.[12, 13] Volunteers of ZAKA Netanya, headed by team commander Shai Romano, worked at the scene for many hours to assist the forensic identification forces and to preserve the dignity of the dead.[12]

✦

The Authorities' Response, the Police Investigation and the Funeral Procession

Upon receiving the grave report, the Israel Police launched an extensive manhunt for the stabber, who had fled the scene.[4, 12] The commander of the Central District, Major General Amir Cohen, arrived at the murder scene, held a special situation assessment and decided to assign the investigation to the Central Unit for Combating Crime (YALAP) Sharon.[12] At the end of a tense manhunt that lasted several hours, detectives of the Netanya station and YALAP officers succeeded in locating and arresting the suspect in the center of the city of Netanya, and his detention was extended in court under a gag order on the details of the investigation.[12]

The murder stunned the city of Netanya and the entire Haredi and Sephardi public.[5, 12] The rabbi's funeral was held that same day, Wednesday, at 13:00, at the Shikun Vatikim cemetery in the city, with the participation of thousands of tearful mourners.[7, 12]

Because of the need to divert large security, policing and protection forces to keeping order and securing the mass funeral procession, the mayor of Netanya, Avi Selma, announced a dramatic decision to cancel the opening of the "Youth City" compound planned for that evening in Independence Square.[7, 10] The police carried out extensive road closures in the area, including the closing to traffic of Degania Street, HaRav Neria Street and the cemetery parking lot.[7]

During the funeral procession and in the mourning notices, many public figures eulogized the rabbi:

Mayor Avi Selma described the rabbi as a pillar of Torah and loving-kindness, an enormous Torah scholar and a great light who embraced every Jew with infinite love, and called on the public to continue his legacy by helping others.[10, 12]

The Shas movement published an unusual statement expressing deep shock at the tragic passing of the kabbalist who had disseminated Torah and drawn distant people closer in pleasant ways for decades.[12]

Chief Rabbi Kalman Ber eulogized the rabbi with great pain and stressed that he was a spiritual leader who influenced thousands of people from all shades of the social spectrum.[2]

✦

A Sociological and Spiritual Analysis of the Model of Leadership and of the Tragedy

The tragic death of Rabbi Amos Guetta, of blessed memory, raises fundamental questions regarding the sociological and security cost of the model of traditional spiritual leadership based on an "open door".[1, 2, 10]

The Built-in Vulnerability of the Popular Kabbalists' Courts

Unlike the courts of Admorim (Hasidic rebbes) or institutionalized rabbis, which are protected by bureaucratic walls, personal assistants and strict security arrangements, kabbalists' courts of Rabbi Guetta's type are fundamentally based on complete accessibility to every person.[1, 2, 3] This accessibility was the focus of his spiritual power and drew to him the weakest strata of society.[3, 12] At the same time, the lack of screening created constant and dangerous exposure to marginal populations and to mentally disturbed people, who seek a remedy for their distress within the mystical space.[13] The tragic murder is expected to provoke a sharp internal debate in similar communities regarding the need to combine maintaining accessibility with taking basic precautions and security measures to protect the lives of the spiritual shepherds.

The Construction of a Collective Memory of Martyrdom

In religious and Haredi society, and particularly among communities of North African origin, Rabbi Guetta's death inside his beit midrash in the midst of a day of prayer is formulated and constructed as an event of "akedah" (binding) and death for the sanctification of God's name.[1, 4] The use of expressions such as "a righteous man is the foundation of the world" and the comparison to historical figures of sages who were murdered at their spiritual post serve as an essential tool for processing the communal mourning.[1] This process ensures that the rabbi's figure will not be remembered merely as the victim of a criminal act of violence, but as a holy spiritual leader who gave his life in the tent of Torah, and in this way his legacy will be commemorated for future generations.[1, 2]
