Core Concept

The revealed and the hidden together: he was considered an expert in all parts of the Torah, revealed and hidden, in his sermons on the Torah he also explained puzzling sayings, and in halakha he took a strict approach and saw a tendency to leniency as the “power of impurity”. His aspiration, as he stated in his will, was to benefit the many, to raise students and to produce true Torah novellae.

Biography

An Italian Jewish rabbi, kabbalist, preacher and poet, a native of Modena, who served as rabbi in several communities in northern Italy and was considered one of the great rabbis of the country. He studied Torah in Modena and Mantua and Kabbalah in Reggio Emilia, and in 1739 began to serve as its rabbi, dying there. Among his books, Zera Shimshon on the Torah and the Five Scrolls and Toldot Shimshon on tractate Avot were printed, and he ordered that his books, especially those on Kabbalah, be buried with him.
