Halakha, preaching
A sermon should stay close to the plain sense and to the practical world: according to the editor of his sermons, he avoided abstract analysis and philosophical ideas with no hold on practical life, which were the way of the preachers of Italy in his day, and sought the plain sense of the text. His book has been printed dozens of times and won great popularity among preachers and the common people. In halakha he clarified the words of Sefer HaTerumot and its sources and compared them with the views of other authorities.
A rabbi, halakhic authority and preacher, a native of Venice and one of the sages of Italy in the 17th century, who studied Torah in his city and also acquired a general education at the university. He served as rabbi of the Pisa community for some twenty years, then returned to Venice and preached in its synagogues. He wrote his commentary Gidulei Terumah on Rabbi Shmuel HaSardi’s Sefer HaTerumot almost without books, and his sermons were printed in his book Binah LaIttim, which appeared after his death.
