Core Concept

For most of the sugyot no earlier commentary lay before him, and his commentary on the Yerushalmi is largely original, and he did not shrink from disagreeing with the Rishonim and at times even with the Rambam. He wove into his commentary halakhic rulings that arise from the sugyot, and these rulings are among the cornerstones of present-day halakhic decision on the commandments dependent on the Land.

Biography

One of the exiles from Spain and a sage of Safed and Jerusalem in the first half of the 16th century, among the first commentators on the Jerusalem Talmud. He studied in Constantinople and Salonica, moved to Safed in 1532 and later to Jerusalem, where he founded a yeshiva. He explained the whole order of Zeraim and the tractate Shekalim, his commentary on Zeraim being the first continuous commentary known on the Jerusalem Talmud, and also compiled a kind of Gemara on the tractate Eduyot.

The Road to Sinai

The archive doesn’t yet record an unbroken road from Rabbi Shlomo Sirilio to the chain of transmission: the trail reaches back to Rabbi Yitzchak Aboab and stops there.
