Core Concept

He was at once a halakhic authority and a teacher of Torah: he received thousands of questions and answered them, wrote commentaries on the Ran, the Rif and the Rambam, and raised students. One of them, the author of the Knesset HaGedolah, received his blessing to write a work on the Semag.

Biography

One of the great halakhic authorities, son of Rabbi Moshe of Trani (the Mabit), born in Safed and one of its rabbis. He moved to Constantinople, where he founded a rabbinical court for questions of prohibition and permission and was appointed Chacham Bashi of Turkey, and students came to his yeshiva from all over Turkey and beyond. He is known for the Responsa of the Maharit and his novellae, and for his commentary Tzofnat Pane’ach on the Torah and the festivals.
