Halakha and halakhic ruling
He arranged the halakha that applies in exile in Toldot Adam VeChavah according to the course of a person’s life: in “Adam” the laws from his birth until his marriage, together with blessings, prayers and customs, and in “Chavah” from his marriage until his death. His rulings are mentioned many times in the Beit Yosef and influenced the rulings of Rabbi Yosef Karo in the Shulchan Arukh, and through it many laws practised even today.
A rabbi and halakhic authority, one of the great Rishonim, who was born in Provence and moved to Toledo after the expulsion of the Jews from France; details of his life are disputed. He studied with the Rosh and afterwards with Rabbi Avraham ben Ishmael, a disciple of the Rashba and the Rosh, whom he regarded as his foremost teacher. He wrote Meisharim on monetary law and Toldot Adam VeChavah on the laws that apply in exile, and the two works are known together by their author’s name, “Rabbenu Yerucham”.
