Core Concept

The meeting of traditions as an engine of creativity: a Spanish–Ashkenazi synthesis that gives birth to a new halakhic and mystical centre.

Biography

Provence is portrayed as a meeting ground between systematic Spanish halakha and Ashkenazi-French dialectic, and as a political and Torah centre around Narbonne and its tradition of nesi'im. Out of that tension early Kabbalah was born, in synthesis with the Ashkenazi Pietists. The chapter shows how a small regional centre changed the spiritual map of the Middle Ages and prepared the ground for later developments.

The Road to Sinai

The archive doesn’t yet record an unbroken road from The Sages of Provence to the chain of transmission: the trail reaches back to Rabbi Yitzchak ben Abba Mari and stops there.
